How to Avoid the Hidden Traps in Retirement Planning Advice\, Tuesday\, January 23rd \nStart your New Year off right and learn how to avoid the hidden traps in retirement planning advice! Did you know that a large financial portfolio\, an estate plan\, and long-term care insurance won’t be enough to prevent your dream retirement from becoming a disaster in the United States? Or do you know someone forced into institutional care after a health crisis\, lost assets due to unplanned medical and long-term care costs\, or became a burden on loved ones? According to Elder Law Attorney and bestselling author Rajiv Nagaich\, these results are called “retirement plan failure.”  Over his 20-plus years of experience in United States elder law\, Rajiv has developed a step-by-step guide to retirement planning by connecting the various dots of the retirement planning process. The LifePlanning approach is a system that brings together legal\, financial\, and housing issues into a coordinated effort that can work to make sure you don’t end up being forced into institutionalized care\, going broke\, and being a burden on your family. In this enlightening and informative webinar\, Rajiv explains why “retirement plan failure” happens and how you can keep it from happening to you. SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Rebecca Serle
DESCRIPTION:Register and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nJoin us as we kick off the New Year talking to Rebecca Serle about her journey writing epic love stories to span generations. Learning the love story formula with Serle\, we’ll chat with the author about her New York Times bestselling novels\, One Italian Summer\, In Five Years\, The Dinner List\, and many more. \nAdditionally\, in a special preview\, Serle will briefly discuss her forthcoming novel (due out on March 5\, 2024) Expiration Dates. In Expiration Dates\, Daphne Bell believes the universe has a plan for her. Every time she meets a new man\, she receives a slip of paper with his name and a number on it—the exact amount of time they will be together. The papers told her she’d spend three days with Martin in Paris; five weeks with Noah in San Francisco; and three months with Hugo\, her ex-boyfriend turned best friend. Daphne has been receiving the numbered papers for over twenty years\, always wondering when there might be one without an expiration. Finally\, on the night of a blind date at her favorite Los Angeles restaurant\, there’s only a name: Jake. \nTold with her signature warmth and insight into matters of the heart\, Rebecca Serle has finally set her sights on romantic love. The result is a gripping\, emotional\, passionate\, and (yes) heartbreaking novel about what it means to be single\, what it means to find love\, and ultimately how we define each of them for ourselves. Expiration Dates is the one fans have been waiting for. Start your year with love and register now! \nAbout the Author: Rebecca Serle is the New York Times bestselling author of Expiration Dates\, One Italian Summer\, In Five Years\, The Dinner List\, and the young adult novels The Edge of Falling and When You Were Mine. Serle also developed the hit TV adaptation Famous in Love\, based on her YA series of the same name. She is a graduate of USC and The New School and lives in Los Angeles with her husband. SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Stephanie Land
DESCRIPTION:Register and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nYou’re invited to an afternoon chat with New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Land as she talks to us about her new memoir\, Class: A Memoir of Motherhood\, Hunger\, and Higher Education. \nWhen Stephanie Land set out to write her first book\, a memoir titled Maid\, she never could have imagined what was to come. Handpicked by President Barack Obama as one of the best books of 2019\, it was later adapted into the hit Netflix series Maid\, which was viewed by 67 million households and was Netflix’s fourth most-watched show in 2021\, garnering three Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Stephanie’s escape from poverty and abuse in search of a better life inspired millions. Maid was a story about a housecleaner\, but it was also a story about a woman with a dream. \nIn Class\, Land takes us with her as she finishes college and pursues her writing career. Facing barriers at every turn\, including a byzantine loan system\, not having enough money for food\, and navigating the judgments of professors and fellow students who didn’t understand the demands of attending college while under the poverty line—Land finds a way to survive once again\, finally graduating in her mid-thirties. \nClass paints an intimate and heartbreaking portrait of motherhood as it converges and often conflicts with personal desire and professional ambition. In clear\, candid\, and moving prose\, Class offers a searing indictment of America’s educational system and an inspiring testimony of a mother’s triumph against all odds. \nAbout the Author: Stephanie Land is the author of the New York Times bestseller Maid: Hard Work\, Low Pay\, and a Mother’s Will to Survive\, called “a testimony…worth listening to\,” by The New York Times and inspiration for the Netflix series Maid. Her work has been featured in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The Atlantic\, and many other outlets. Her writing focuses on social and economic justice and parenting under the poverty line. She is a frequent speaker at colleges and national advocacy organizations. Find out more at @Stepville or Stepville.com

Now\, she’s surrounded by mega-rich companies designing private weather\, predictive analytics\, and covert weaponry\, while spouting technological prophecy. Martha may have left the cult\, but if the apocalyptic warnings in her father’s fox and rabbit sermon—once a parable to her—are starting to come true\, how much future is actually left? \nAcross the world\, in a mall in Singapore\, Lai Zhen\, an internet-famous survivalist\, flees from an assassin. She’s cornered\, desperate and—worst of all—might die without ever knowing what’s going on. Suddenly\, a remarkable piece of software appears on her phone telling her exactly how to escape. Who made it? What is it really for? And if those behind it can save her from danger\, what do they want from her\, and what else do they know about the future? \nMartha and Zhen’s worlds are about to collide. An explosive chain of events is set in motion. While a few billionaires assured of their own safety lead the world to destruction\, Martha’s relentless drive and Zhen’s insatiable curiosity could lead to something beautiful or the cataclysmic end of civilization. \nBy turns thrilling\, hilarious\, tender\, and always piercingly brilliant\, The Future unfolds at a breakneck speed\, highlighting how power corrupts the few who have it and what it means to stand up to them. The future is coming. The Future is here. What are you waiting for? Register now! \nAbout the Author: Naomi Alderman is the bestselling author of The Power\, which was the winner of the 2017 Baileys’ Women’s Prize for Fiction. It was longlisted for the 2017 Orwell Prize and chosen as one of the best books of the year by the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the Los Angeles Times\, NPR\, Entertainment Weekly and the San Francisco Chronicle. The Power topped Barack Obama’s list of his favorite books from 2017 and has been translated into more than thirty languages. Naomi grew up in London and attended Oxford University and UEA.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Joy Harjo
DESCRIPTION:Register and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nUnited States Poet Laureate and winner of the 2022 Academy of American Poets Leadership Award\, Joy Harjo\, joins us for a chat about her most recent memoir\, Catching the Light and to discuss her rewarding lifetime as a writer and poet. \nIn Catching the Light\, Harjo examines the power of words and how poetry summons us toward justice and healing. \nIn this lyrical meditation about the why of writing poetry\, Harjo reflects on significant points of illumination\, experience\, and questioning from her fifty years as a poet. Comprised of intimate vignettes that take us through the author’s life journey as a youth in the late 1960s\, a single mother\, and a champion of Native nations\, this book offers a fresh understanding of how poetry functions as an expression of purpose\, spirit\, community\, and memory. \nHarjo insists the most meaningful poetry is birthed through cracks in history from what is broken and unseen. At the crossroads of this brokenness\, she calls us to watch and listen for the songs of justice for all those America has denied. This is an homage to the power of words to defy erasure—to inscribe the story\, again and again\, of who we have been\, who we are\, and who we can be. \nAbout the Author: In 2019\, Joy Harjo was appointed the 23rd United States Poet Laureate\, the first Native American to hold the position and only the second person to serve three terms in the role. Harjo’s nine books of poetry include Weaving Sundown in a Scarlett Light\, An American Sunrise\, Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings\, How We Became Human: New and Selected Poems\, and She Had Some Horses. She is also the author of two memoirs\, Crazy Brave and Poet Warrior\, which invites us to travel along the heartaches\, losses\, and humble realizations of her “poet-warrior” road. She has edited several anthologies of Native American writing including When the Light of the World was Subdued\, Our Songs Came Through — A Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry\, and Living Nations\, Living Words\, the companion anthology to her signature poet laureate project. Her many writing awards include the 2022 Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award\, the 2019 Jackson Prize from Poets & Writers\, the Ruth Lilly Prize from the Poetry Foundation\, the 2015 Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets\, and the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America. She is a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets\, Board of Directors Chair of the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation\, and is artist-in-residence for the Bob Dylan Center. A renowned musician\, Harjo performs with her saxophone nationally and internationally; her most recent album is I Pray For My Enemies. She lives in Tulsa\, Oklahoma.
