SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Xochitl Gonzalez
DESCRIPTION:A Literary Examination of Power\, Love\, and Art with Xochitl Gonzalez \nRegister and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nWe cannot wait for you to join us as we chat with award-winning and bestselling author Xochitl Gonzalez about her newest novel Anita de Monte Laughs Last.  \nAnita de Monte Laughs Last is a propulsive\, witty examination of power\, love\, and art\, daring to ask who gets to be remembered and who is left behind in the rarefied world of the elite. In 1985. Anita de Monte\, a rising star in the art world\, is found dead in New York City; her tragic death is the talk of the town. Until it isn’t. By 1998 Anita’s name had been all but forgotten―certainly by the time Raquel\, a third-year art history student was preparing her final thesis. On College Hill\, surrounded by privileged students whose futures are already paved out for them\, Raquel feels like an outsider. Students of color\, like her\, are the minority there\, and the pressure to work twice as hard for the same opportunities is no secret. But when Raquel becomes romantically involved with a well-connected older art student\, she finds herself unexpectedly rising up the social ranks. As she attempts to straddle both worlds\, she stumbles upon Anita’s story\, raising questions about the dynamics of her own relationship\, which eerily mirrors that of the forgotten artist. \nMoving back and forth through time and told from the perspectives of both Anita and Raquel\, this is sure a novel (and a conversation) that you don’t want to miss. Register now! \nAbout the Author: Xochitl Gonzalez is the New York Times bestselling author of Olga Dies Dreaming. Named Best of 2022 by The New York Times\, TIME\, Kirkus\, Washington Post\, and NPR\, Olga Dies Dreaming was the winner of the Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize in Fiction and the New York City Book Award. Gonzalez is a 2021 MFA graduate from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Her nonfiction work has been published in Elle Decor\, Allure\, Vogue\, Real Simple\, and The Cut. Her commentary writing for The Atlantic was recognized as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. A native Brooklynite and proud public school graduate\, Gonzalez holds a BA from Brown University and lives in her hometown of Brooklyn with her dog\, Hectah Lavoe.

SUMMARY:Local Author Spotlight: Mary Dezember\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Mary Dezember\, Ph.D.\, is an award-winning author of stories and poetry as portals to possibilities. \nWild Conviction is her debut novel and\, thus far\, her life’s work. Much of the novel’s action happens in historical Evansville. \nMary entered her writing career as a journalist. Born in Evansville\, she was the editor of her high school newspaper\, the Reitz Mirror\, and wrote features for the Evansville Sunday Courier & Press. She earned her B.A. from the University of Evansville then worked as Public Relations Specialist at Welborn Hospital. \nAfter earning her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Indiana University\, she taught English literature\, writing\, comparative arts\, art history\, and social issues for twenty-one years. Professor Emeritus of English at New Mexico Tech\, she is a scholar of the arts\, literature\, writing\, and an advocate of creativity. A lover of the beauty and power of language\, she states: “We spell words and\, arranged well\, words can put a spell on us.” \nHer novel and her two books of poetry explore the rite of passage to identity\, including the hero’s emotional and intellectual quest. Mary likes to make life magical\, even if that means simply cuddling a cat\, channeling the muse\, or reading a good book. She lives in New Mexico\, the Land of Enchantment. \nJoin us in the Browning Gallery at 6:00pm on April 2nd as Dr. Dezember takes us on a journey through the pages of her thought-provoking debut novel\, “Wild Conviction.” Several chapters of the novel are set in Evansville during the antebellum and early Civil War periods. Willard Carpenter is mentioned in the story\, and the research acknowledgements include Willard Public Library. A brief Q & A session and book signing will follow. Visit https://www.marydezember.com/ for more information about the author and her work! \n2023 Release: Debut Novel “WILD CONVICTION” \n1858. When secrets about her ancestry ignite a young woman to help enslaved children at a wicked plantation\, she discovers what the captives know too well — survival isn’t freedom. \nWild Conviction is a socially conscious\, richly historical novel\, sprinkled with magic and love. For this novel\, Dr. Dezember created a scenario within a historical setting in which the terms Rich-tone and Pale are used for skin tone — and without historical or contemporary derogatory terms. \n   \n“Wild Conviction is a book that will transport you to a world of heated tensions and mesmerizing characters. From the first page\, it will draw you into a world where reality and the supernatural intersect\, and the past and present collide unexpectedly. Mary Dezember’s outstanding book tells the story of a spirited teenager in a captivating and inspiring way. With a signature writing style\, Dezember expertly weaves together a tale of adventure\, self-discovery\, and personal growth that will have readers of all ages hooked from the very first page.” — Suzie Housley for Midwest Book Review \n\n“…‘Wild Conviction’ is an amazing story that has a little bit of everything readers enjoy…history\, romance\, suspense\, very strong characters\, and just a little bit of magic to pull it together. Mary Dezember put so much research into this book to make the period come alive for readers and to connect the past to today. It is well-written\, very accurate\, and mesmerizing; and it is one that you cannot put down once you begin…There is absolutely nothing to say about this book that is not complimentary. ‘Wild Conviction’ is a story that should not be missed by anyone.” — Kathy Stickles for Reader Views \n\nMary’s books can be purchased before the event at Your Brother’s Bookstore\, (504 Main Street in Evansville) or on Amazon. \nBring your copy to this event for the book signing!

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Madeline Miller
DESCRIPTION:On Retelling Greek Classics: An Exploration of the Modern Epics with Madeline Miller\nRegister and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nYou’re invited to a fascinating exploratory conversation with Madeline Miller\, bestselling author of The Song of Achilles and Circe\, as she chats with us about her body of work and her process in retelling Greek classics into modern epics in fiction. \nIn The Song of Achilles\, Achilles\, “the best of all the Greeks\,” son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus\, is strong\, swift\, and beautiful\, irresistible to all who meet him. Patroclus is an awkward young prince\, exiled from his homeland after an act of shocking violence. Brought together by chance\, they forge an inseparable bond\, despite risking the gods’ wrath. \nWhen word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped\, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny\, Achilles joins their cause\, and torn between love and fear for his friend\, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the cruel Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice. \nIn Circe\, to Helios\, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans\, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child–neither powerful like her father nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship\, she discovers that she does possess power: the power of witchcraft\, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. \nThreatened\, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island\, where she hones her occult craft\, tames wild beasts\, and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology\, including the Minotaur\, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus\, the murderous Medea\, and\, of course\, wily Odysseus. But there is danger\, too\, for a woman who stands alone\, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods\, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most\, Circe must summon all her strength and choose\, once and for all\, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from or with the mortals she has come to love. \nAbout the Author: Madeline Miller is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of two novels: The Song of Achilles\, which won the Orange Women’s Prize for Fiction 2012\, and Circe\, which was short-listed for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2019. Her books have been translated into over thirty two languages. Miller holds an MA in Classics from Brown University\, studied in the Dramaturgy department at Yale School of Drama\, where she focused on the adaptation of classical texts to modern forms\, and taught Latin\, Greek\, and Shakespeare to high school students for over a decade.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Nina Totenberg
DESCRIPTION:The Power of Friendships with NPR Legal Affairs Correspondent Nina Totenberg\nRegister and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nYou are invited to an intimate conversation with Nina Totenberg as she talks about her nearly fifty-year friendship with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her book Dinners With Ruth: A Memoir on the Power of Friendships. \nFour years before Nina Totenberg was hired at NPR\, where she cemented her legacy as a prizewinning reporter\, and nearly twenty-two years before Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court\, Nina called Ruth. A reporter for The National Observer\, Nina was curious about Ruth’s legal brief\, asking the Supreme Court to do something to declare law that discriminated “on the basis of sex” to be unconstitutional. In a time when women were fired for becoming pregnant\, often could not apply for credit cards or get a mortgage in their own names\, Ruth patiently explained her argument. That call launched a remarkable\, nearly fifty-year friendship. \nDinners with Ruth is an extraordinary account of two women who paved the way for future generations by tearing down professional and legal barriers. It is also an intimate memoir of the power of friendships as women began to pry open career doors and transform the workplace. At the story’s heart is one\, special Ruth and Nina saw each other not only through personal joys\, but also illness\, loss\, and widowhood. During the devastating illness and eventual death of Nina’s first husband\, Ruth drew her out of grief; twelve years later\, Nina would reciprocate when Ruth’s beloved husband died. They shared not only a love of opera\, but also of shopping\, as they instinctively understood that clothes were armor for women who wanted to be taken seriously in a workplace dominated by men. During Ruth’s last year\, they shared so many small dinners that Saturdays were “reserved for Ruth” in Nina’s house. Dinners with Ruth also weaves together compelling\, personal portraits of other fascinating women and men from Nina’s life\, including her cherished NPR colleagues Cokie Roberts and Linda Wertheimer; her beloved husbands; her friendships with multiple Supreme Court Justices\, including Lewis Powell\, William Brennan\, and Antonin Scalia\, and Nina’s own family—her father\, the legendary violinist Roman Totenberg\, and her “best friends\,” her sisters. \nCelebrated NPR correspondent Nina Totenberg delivers an extraordinary memoir of her personal successes\, struggles\, and life-affirming relationships. Inspiring and revelatory\, Dinners with Ruth is a moving story of the joy and true meaning of friendship. \nAbout the Author: NINA TOTENBERG is NPR’s award-winning legal affairs correspondent. She appears on NPR’s critically acclaimed news magazines All Things Considered\, Morning Edition\, and Weekend Edition\, and on NPR podcasts\, including The NPR Politics Podcast and its series\, “The Docket.” Totenberg’s Supreme Court and legal coverage has won her every major journalism award in broadcasting. Recognized seven times by the American Bar Association for continued excellence in legal reporting\, she has received more than two dozen honorary degrees. A frequent TV contributor\, she writes for major newspapers\, magazines\, and law reviews.
