Book signing to follow! \n\nErnest Hemingway’s cartoonish “Papa” persona – the brawler\, boozer\, braggart\, big game hunter\, and chronic womanizer— often overshadows his greatness as a writer. In this presentation\, we will ignore the temptations of biography and myth to concentrate instead on the most enduring contribution of Hemingway’s life: his writing. Using Hemingway’s “one true sentence” credo as inspiration\, we will examine representative sentences from texts such as The Sun Also Rises\, A Farewell to Arms\, and A Moveable Feast to discover techniques that gave his work such lasting power. \n\n\nDr. Mark Cirino is a Professor of English and Melvin M. Peterson Endowed Chair of English at the University of Evansville\, where he has taught American literature for fifteen years. He has authored or edited ten books\, including Ernest Hemingway: Thought in Action\, Reading Hemingway’s Across the River and into the Trees\, and most recently\, One True Sentence: Writers & Readers on Hemingway’s Art\, which he edited with Michael Von Cannon. He hosts the Hemingway Society’s popular One True Podcast\, which explores Ernest Hemingway’s life\, work\, and world.\n

SUMMARY:Beyond Books -- Annual Egg Tree Contest
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate our Annual Egg Tree Contest. \nAt this program we will provide paint and paintable “eggs” (Not real eggs). Kids are encouraged to decorate an egg and enter it in our Annual Egg Tree Contest. They do not have to turn these eggs in and are allowed to take them home. Paint appropriate clothes are encouraged. \nEggs are also available for pick up in our Children’s Department. \nThere are three categories that children can submit their eggs in: Most Artistic\, Best Character (literary characters are encouraged but not required) and Scrambled (kids must be 4 and under to enter their egg in the scrambled category). \nEggs that are are turned in by Easter (April 9th) will be judged as part of the Egg Tree Contest. \nThe Egg Tree is located in Adult Services on our first floor. After the cut off date (Easter) we give all of our staff a few days to vote on their favorite eggs from each category and the winners are announced. \nAll events are free & open to the public.

SUMMARY:Native Fascism: Evansville’s 1948 Wallace Riot
DESCRIPTION:Join WPL Archives and the Vanderburgh County Historical Society in the Browning Gallery on Monday\, March 13 at 6:00pm to hear Dr. Denise Lynn’s presentation. \nDescription of the Program: In April 1948\, Progressive Party candidate for President Henry Wallace arrived in Indiana to much controversy. The conservative state did not welcome Wallace and veteran’s organizations actively organized to disrupt his speaking engagements. On April 6 at the Progressive Party’s Evansville event\, a mob attacked the Wallace supporters causing injuries and pushing Evansville into the national spotlight. In the wake of the riot\, a local professor was fired for his involvement in the Wallace campaign and the radical CIO Local 813 became the subject of House committee hearings. This anticommunist hysteria gripped the Evansville community and led to populist fascist reaction beginning with the violence at the riot. This presentation argues that what happened in Evansville on April 6 was part of a populist fascism in the United States propelled by anticommunism and enacted by veteran’s organizations. While national politicians dominate histories of anticommunism\, some of the greatest damage done during that period occurred when other Americans\, specifically veteran’s groups\, violated the constitutional rights of their fellow citizens. \nAbout Dr. Lynn: Originally from Upstate New York\, she attended SUNY Binghamton\, State University of New York where she received her MA and PhD. Her research focuses on women in the American Communist Party. Dr. Lynn is the Vice-President of the Historians of American Communism and the editor of its journal American Communist History. She has written a regular blog for Black Perspectives and has written for Nursing Clio\, Marxist Sociology\, and Lawrence & Wishart. Her articles have appeared in American Communist History\, Women’s History Review\, Journal of Cold War Studies\, Radical Americas\, Journal of Intersectionality\, and Journal for the Study of Radicalism. Dr. Lynn is the author of Where is Juliet Stuart Poyntz? Gender\, Spycraft\, and Anti-Stalinism in the Early Cold War from the University of Massachusetts Press. Her current book project is on radical Black women in the anti-Korean war movement and a biography of Claudia Jones.
