SUMMARY:Mother Jones
DESCRIPTION:Chances are you’ve never heard of Mother Jones\, but this is a story you’ll want to hear.  Born Mary Harris in Cork Co. Ireland\, she immigrated with her parents to Canada as a teen and then to the United States as an adult.  She lost her husband and four children in the Yellow Fever outbreak in Memphis in 1867.  She left Memphis and moved to Chicago\, opening her own dress shop which she then lost in the Great Chicago Fire.  Next\, she joined the Knights of Labor and became active in strike organization.  Her involvement in the labor movement continued to grow until she was labeled by one US Attorney as “The most dangerous woman in America.”  She was particularly passionate about protecting children.  On May 17th a plaque will be installed on the Greenway in her honor\, the first plaque honoring the labor movement to be installed in Indiana.  Come learn more about this strong\, fascinating woman who so influenced our country. \n  \nOur speaker is Steve Bottoms\, a labor history researcher as well as a former Gibson County Commissioner.  He worked for Whirlpool\, and at union coal mines in the 1970’s. \n  \nPresentation will be in the Browning Gallery at Willard Public Library. \n  \nThis presentation is a joint program of the Tri-State Genealogical Society and Willard Public Library

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: William Kent Krueger
DESCRIPTION:Register and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nYou are in for a riveting hour online with New York Times bestselling author William Kent Krueger! Join us as he discusses his newest book in the Cork O’Connor series Fox Creek and his other works! \nFox Creek follows Cork O”Connor in a race against time to save his wife\, a mysterious stranger\, and an Ojibwe healer from bloodthirsty mercenaries. The ancient Ojibwe healer Henry Meloux has had a vision of his death. As he walks the Northwoods in solitude\, he tries to prepare himself peacefully for the end of his long life. But peace is destined to elude him as hunters fill the woods seeking a woman named Dolores Morriseau\, a stranger who had come to the healer for shelter and the gift of his wisdom. Meloux guides this stranger and his great niece\, Cork O’Connor’s wife\, to safety deep into the Boundary Waters\, his home for more than a century. Meanwhile\, in Aurora\, Cork works feverishly to identify the hunters and the reason for their relentless pursuit\, but he has little to go on. He knows only too well that with each passing hour time is running out. But his fiercest enemy in this deadly game of cat and mouse may well be his own deep self-doubt about his ability to save those he loves. \nAbout the Author: Krueger writes a mystery series set in the north woods of Minnesota. His protagonist is Cork O’Connor\, the former sheriff of Tamarack County and a man of mixed heritage—part Irish and part Ojibwe. His work has received a number of awards\, including the Minnesota Book Award\, the Loft-McKnight Fiction Award\, the Anthony Award\, the Barry Award\, the Dilys Award\, and the Friends of American Writers Prize. \nOrdinary Grace\, his stand-alone novel published in 2013\, received the Edgar Award\, given by the Mystery Writers of America in recognition for the best novel published in that year. The companion novel\, This Tender Land\, was published in September 2019 and spent nearly six months on the New York Times bestseller list. His last nine novels were all New York Times bestsellers. He’s been married for nearly fifty years to a marvelous woman who is a retired attorney. He makes his home in St. Paul\, a city he dearly loves.

SUMMARY:Ernest Hemingway: One True Sentence
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Mark Cirino presents “Ernest Hemingway: One True Sentence” on Monday\, April 17 at 6:00pm in the Browning Gallery (lower level) at Willard Public Library. Book signing to follow! \n\nErnest Hemingway’s cartoonish “Papa” persona – the brawler\, boozer\, braggart\, big game hunter\, and chronic womanizer— often overshadows his greatness as a writer. In this presentation\, we will ignore the temptations of biography and myth to concentrate instead on the most enduring contribution of Hemingway’s life: his writing. Using Hemingway’s “one true sentence” credo as inspiration\, we will examine representative sentences from texts such as The Sun Also Rises\, A Farewell to Arms\, and A Moveable Feast to discover techniques that gave his work such lasting power. \n\n\nDr. Mark Cirino is a Professor of English and Melvin M. Peterson Endowed Chair of English at the University of Evansville\, where he has taught American literature for fifteen years. He has authored or edited ten books\, including Ernest Hemingway: Thought in Action\, Reading Hemingway’s Across the River and into the Trees\, and most recently\, One True Sentence: Writers & Readers on Hemingway’s Art\, which he edited with Michael Von Cannon. He hosts the Hemingway Society’s popular One True Podcast\, which explores Ernest Hemingway’s life\, work\, and world.\n

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Kate Beaton: Bestselling Cartoonist of Hark! A Vagrant!
DESCRIPTION:Register and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nJoin us for an enlightening hour online with highly-acclaimed Kate Beaton\, the New York Times bestselling author of Hark! A Vagrant! And Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands. \nBefore there was Kate Beaton\, New York Times bestselling cartoonist of Hark! A Vagrant! fame\, there was Katie Beaton of the Cape Breton Beatons\, specifically Mabou\, a tight-knit seaside community where the lobster is as abundant as beaches\, fiddles\, and Gaelic folk songs. Her first full-length graphic narrative follows Beaton after university as she heads out west to take advantage of Alberta’s oil rush\, part of the long tradition of East Coasters who seek gainful employment elsewhere when they can’t find it in the homeland they love so much. With the singular goal of paying off her student loans\, what the journey will actually cost Beaton will be far more than she anticipates. \nArriving in Fort McMurray\, Beaton finds work in the lucrative camps owned and operated by the world’s largest oil companies. Being one of the few women among thousands of men\, the culture shock is palpable. It does not hit home until she moves to a spartan\, isolated worksite for higher pay. She encounters the harsh reality of life in the oil sands where trauma is an everyday occurrence yet never discussed. Her wounds may never heal. \nBeaton’s natural cartooning prowess is on full display as she draws colossal machinery and mammoth vehicles set against a sublime Albertan backdrop of wildlife\, Northern Lights\, and Rocky Mountains. Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands is more than a memoir\, it’s also an untold story of Canada: a country that prides itself on its egalitarian ethos and natural beauty while simultaneously exploiting both the riches of its land and the humanity of its people. \nAbout the Author: Kate Beaton was born and raised in Cape Breton\, Nova Scotia\, Canada. After graduating from Mount Allison University with a double degree in History and Anthropology\, she moved to Alberta in search of work that would allow her to pay down her student loans. During the years she spent out West\, Beaton began creating webcomics under the name Hark! A Vagrant\, quickly drawing a substantial following around the world. The collections of her landmark strip Hark! A Vagrant and Step Aside\, Pops each spent several months on the New York Times graphic novel bestseller list\, as well as appearing on best of the year lists from Time\, The Washington Post\, Vulture\, NPR Books\, and winning the Eisner\, Ignatz\, Harvey\, and Doug Wright Awards. She has also published the picture books King Baby and The Princess and the Pony. Beaton lives in Cape Breton with her family.
