SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Stephanie Land
DESCRIPTION:Register and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nYou’re invited to an afternoon chat with New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Land as she talks to us about her new memoir\, Class: A Memoir of Motherhood\, Hunger\, and Higher Education. \nWhen Stephanie Land set out to write her first book\, a memoir titled Maid\, she never could have imagined what was to come. Handpicked by President Barack Obama as one of the best books of 2019\, it was later adapted into the hit Netflix series Maid\, which was viewed by 67 million households and was Netflix’s fourth most-watched show in 2021\, garnering three Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Stephanie’s escape from poverty and abuse in search of a better life inspired millions. Maid was a story about a housecleaner\, but it was also a story about a woman with a dream. \nIn Class\, Land takes us with her as she finishes college and pursues her writing career. Facing barriers at every turn\, including a byzantine loan system\, not having enough money for food\, and navigating the judgments of professors and fellow students who didn’t understand the demands of attending college while under the poverty line—Land finds a way to survive once again\, finally graduating in her mid-thirties. \nClass paints an intimate and heartbreaking portrait of motherhood as it converges and often conflicts with personal desire and professional ambition. In clear\, candid\, and moving prose\, Class offers a searing indictment of America’s educational system and an inspiring testimony of a mother’s triumph against all odds. \nAbout the Author: Stephanie Land is the author of the New York Times bestseller Maid: Hard Work\, Low Pay\, and a Mother’s Will to Survive\, called “a testimony…worth listening to\,” by The New York Times and inspiration for the Netflix series Maid. Her work has been featured in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The Atlantic\, and many other outlets. Her writing focuses on social and economic justice and parenting under the poverty line. She is a frequent speaker at colleges and national advocacy organizations. Find out more at @Stepville or Stepville.com

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Naomi Alderman
DESCRIPTION:Register and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nBestselling and award-winning author\, Naomi Alderman will join us to talk about her new book\, The Future. This new novel delivers a dazzling tour de force where a handful of friends plot a daring heist to save the world from the tech giants whose greed threatens life as we know it. \nWhen Martha Einkorn fled her father’s isolated compound in Oregon\, she never expected to find herself working for a powerful social media mogul hell-bent on controlling everything. Now\, she’s surrounded by mega-rich companies designing private weather\, predictive analytics\, and covert weaponry\, while spouting technological prophecy. Martha may have left the cult\, but if the apocalyptic warnings in her father’s fox and rabbit sermon—once a parable to her—are starting to come true\, how much future is actually left? \nAcross the world\, in a mall in Singapore\, Lai Zhen\, an internet-famous survivalist\, flees from an assassin. She’s cornered\, desperate and—worst of all—might die without ever knowing what’s going on. Suddenly\, a remarkable piece of software appears on her phone telling her exactly how to escape. Who made it? What is it really for? And if those behind it can save her from danger\, what do they want from her\, and what else do they know about the future? \nMartha and Zhen’s worlds are about to collide. An explosive chain of events is set in motion. While a few billionaires assured of their own safety lead the world to destruction\, Martha’s relentless drive and Zhen’s insatiable curiosity could lead to something beautiful or the cataclysmic end of civilization. \nBy turns thrilling\, hilarious\, tender\, and always piercingly brilliant\, The Future unfolds at a breakneck speed\, highlighting how power corrupts the few who have it and what it means to stand up to them. The future is coming. The Future is here. What are you waiting for? Register now! \nAbout the Author: Naomi Alderman is the bestselling author of The Power\, which was the winner of the 2017 Baileys’ Women’s Prize for Fiction. It was longlisted for the 2017 Orwell Prize and chosen as one of the best books of the year by the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the Los Angeles Times\, NPR\, Entertainment Weekly and the San Francisco Chronicle. The Power topped Barack Obama’s list of his favorite books from 2017 and has been translated into more than thirty languages. Naomi grew up in London and attended Oxford University and UEA.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Joy Harjo
DESCRIPTION:Register and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nUnited States Poet Laureate and winner of the 2022 Academy of American Poets Leadership Award\, Joy Harjo\, joins us for a chat about her most recent memoir\, Catching the Light and to discuss her rewarding lifetime as a writer and poet. \nIn Catching the Light\, Harjo examines the power of words and how poetry summons us toward justice and healing. \nIn this lyrical meditation about the why of writing poetry\, Harjo reflects on significant points of illumination\, experience\, and questioning from her fifty years as a poet. Comprised of intimate vignettes that take us through the author’s life journey as a youth in the late 1960s\, a single mother\, and a champion of Native nations\, this book offers a fresh understanding of how poetry functions as an expression of purpose\, spirit\, community\, and memory. \nHarjo insists the most meaningful poetry is birthed through cracks in history from what is broken and unseen. At the crossroads of this brokenness\, she calls us to watch and listen for the songs of justice for all those America has denied. This is an homage to the power of words to defy erasure—to inscribe the story\, again and again\, of who we have been\, who we are\, and who we can be. \nAbout the Author: In 2019\, Joy Harjo was appointed the 23rd United States Poet Laureate\, the first Native American to hold the position and only the second person to serve three terms in the role. Harjo’s nine books of poetry include Weaving Sundown in a Scarlett Light\, An American Sunrise\, Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings\, How We Became Human: New and Selected Poems\, and She Had Some Horses. She is also the author of two memoirs\, Crazy Brave and Poet Warrior\, which invites us to travel along the heartaches\, losses\, and humble realizations of her “poet-warrior” road. She has edited several anthologies of Native American writing including When the Light of the World was Subdued\, Our Songs Came Through — A Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry\, and Living Nations\, Living Words\, the companion anthology to her signature poet laureate project. Her many writing awards include the 2022 Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award\, the 2019 Jackson Prize from Poets & Writers\, the Ruth Lilly Prize from the Poetry Foundation\, the 2015 Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets\, and the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America. She is a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets\, Board of Directors Chair of the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation\, and is artist-in-residence for the Bob Dylan Center. A renowned musician\, Harjo performs with her saxophone nationally and internationally; her most recent album is I Pray For My Enemies. She lives in Tulsa\, Oklahoma.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Tiffany Aliche
DESCRIPTION:Register and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nTiffany Aliche was a successful preschool teacher with a healthy nest egg when a recession and advice from a shady advisor put her out of a job and into a huge financial hole. As she began to chart the path to her own financial rescue\, the outline of her ten-step formula for attaining both financial security and peace of mind began to take shape. While Indiana enforced prohibition\, neighboring Kentucky\, just across the Ohio River\, did not. Evansville\, a brewery town with a strong German cultural influence\, faced a unique struggle during this time. The city gained notoriety for being “wide open” as it grappled with liquor-related challenges. One of the most significant incidents was the prosecution of Evansville’s Chief of Police\, Edgar Schmitt\, in the 1920 Evansville whiskey ring conspiracy. \nAbout the Author: Erick Jones \nErick Jones\, the great-grandson of Evansville\, Indiana Police Captain Andy Friedle\, brings his family’s rich history to life through his debut book\, “Wide Open Evansville.” This book is the result of several years of meticulous research and offers a sensational\, detailed account of the 1920 whiskey ring conspiracy. Erick’s family ties to prohibition go beyond his great-grandfather; he is also the great-grandson of former Vanderburgh County sheriff’s deputy Jesse Jones\, who later became a federal prohibition agent. Despite residing in Ohio now\, Erick holds fond memories of spending his summers as a child with his grandparents in Evansville. \nDon’t miss this unique opportunity to delve into Evansville’s captivating past during the Prohibition Era with Erick Jones as your guide. This event promises to be an enlightening and engaging evening\, and we look forward to welcoming you at the Browning Gallery in Willard Public Library. Join us in uncovering the hidden history of Evansville!

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Adam Alter
DESCRIPTION:Register and view future Author Talks here: https://libraryc.org/willardlib \nJoin us as we chat with New York Times bestselling author Adam Alter about his new book Anatomy of a Breakthrough: How to Get Unstuck When It Matters Most.  \nAlmost everyone feels stuck in some way. Whether you’re muddling through a midlife crisis\, wrestling with writer’s block\, trapped in a thankless job\, or trying to remedy a fraying friendship\, the resulting emotion is usually a mix of anxiety\, uncertainty\, fear\, anger\, and numbness. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Anatomy of a Breakthrough is the roadmap we all need to escape our inertia and flourish in the face of friction. \nThe solution to becoming unstuck rests on a process that Alter calls a friction audit—a systematic procedure that uncovers why a person or organization is stuck and then suggests a path to progress. The friction audit states that people and organizations get unstuck when they overcome three sources of friction: HEART (unhelpful emotions); HEAD (unhelpful patterns of thought); and HABIT (unhelpful behaviors). \nArtfully weaving together scientific studies\, anecdotes\, and interviews\, Alter teaches us that getting stuck is a feature rather than a glitch on the road to thriving\, but with the right tweaks and corrections\, we can reach even our loftiest targets. \nAbout the Author: Adam Alter is a professor of marketing and the Stansky Teaching Excellence Faculty Fellow at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He also holds an affiliated professorship in social psychology at NYU’s psychology department. In 2020 he was voted professor of the year by the faculty and student body at NYU’s Stern School of Business and was among the Poets and Quants 40 Best Professors Under 40 in 2017. Alter is the New York Times bestselling author of two books: Drunk Tank Pink and Irresistible.

But when a communist regime annexed Istria\, Lidia’s family fled to Trieste\, where they spent two years in a refugee camp waiting for visas to enter the United States. When she finally arrived in New York\, Lidia soon began working in restaurants\, the first step leading to her becoming one of the most revered chefs and businesswomen in the country. Heartwarming\, deeply personal\, and powerfully inspiring\, My American Dream is the story of Lidia’s close-knit family and her dedication and endless passion for food. \nAs a special bonus (and pre-release!) Lidia will preview and chat about her newest cookbook Lidia’s From Our Family Table to Yours: More Than 100 Recipes Made With Love For All Occasions: A Cookbook. In this inviting\, deeply personal new cookbook\, she shares the dishes she cooks for those she loves the most. This is the first book Lidia has written since the death of her mother\, Nonna\, who was beloved not only by Lidia’s family but also by millions of cookbook and TV fans. With all the family stories and passed-down recipes\, in many ways\, this book can be seen as a tribute to Nonna. Bringing together more than a hundred delicious\, flavorful\, and easy-to-make Italian recipes\, From Our Family’s Table to Yours is a celebration of the dishes Lidia’s family turns to over and over—and yours will\, too. From Crespelle with Herb Pesto to Penne with Sausage\, Mushrooms\, and Ricotta Vegetable Polpette to Mimosa Cake\, this book is the next best thing to a seat at Lidia’s kitchen table. \nAbout the Author: Lidia Matticchio Bastianich is the author of fifteen previous cookbooks and is the Emmy Award-winning host of public television’s Lidia’s Kitchen\, which also airs internationally. She was a judge on Junior MasterChef Italy and has appeared on Italy’s highly-rated daily program La Prova del Cuoco.
